Air transport is the fastest mode of transport if we want to travel from one location to another. Though it is a bit costly but it is also considered as one of the most safest means of transport. Air transport is known for the luxury and safety that it provides in addition with the advantage of taking less time. But, as it is said, if something bad have to happen, it will happen. Nothing can be predicted about the future. And thus, when it comes to destiny, we see that even the most safest transport fails to provide security and we can thus come across an accident. We all have heard about many plane crashes which are mostly due to technical problems, some unpredictable faults, pilot errors, mechanical failure, weather conditions, air traffic control errors, improper and overloading of aircraft, fuel contamination, hijackings and many more other reasons are there. 10. U.S. OLYMPIC BOXING TEAM
This plane crash took place on 14 March, 1980 and killed all 87 people who were on the plane, which also included 22 members of the boxing team of United States. Due to engine failure flight lost its control which led to this mishappening. The flight crashed while attempting to land at Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport, Poland while returning from John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York. It was a Soviet-built Ilyushin 62 jet, which was crashed. Lemuel Steeples who was one of the best boxer of those years, was also on the plane and as a tribute to these players U.S. did not participated in Boxing in the Olympics that year.
9. FOOTBALL TEAM OF MARSHALL UNIVERSITY
This disastrous plane crash which took the lives of 75 people took place on 14 November, 1970. Along with the 37 players of the Thundering Herd Football Team and 5 coaches of the team, 33 civilians were also on the plane, who lost their lives in this plane crash. It was the Southern Airways Flight 932 which was crashed while approaching towards the Tri State Airport, Huntington while returning from Kinston, North Carolina. 13 players of the team were not on the flight due to injury or some other reasons. The team was coming after playing the match against the East Carolina University Pirates at Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina which they lost by 17–14. A temporary morgue was set up in the National Guard armory at the airport to identify the bodies and finally all of them were buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, together.
8. JONATHAN MANN
Jonathan Mann died in a plane crash on September 3, 1998 in the Swissair crash in Canada. Jonathan Mann was the founding director of the World Health Organisation’s global Aids programme, and was also considered as key figure in the fight against HIV and AIDS as he highlighted the need for a worldwide response to the crisis.
7. JOHN DENVER
John Denver who was a singer and songwriter was killed in plane crash on October 13, 1997. The plane which crashed was Rutan Long – EZ which he had just bought a few days before he met with this accident. It was a single engine and two seated, fiberglass plane which he was piloting, that crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Pacific Grove, California. It took several hours to identify Denver’s remains as his body was really in a bad condition.
6. JOHN F. KENNEDY, JR.
John F. Kennedy, Jr. died in a plane crash because of pilot error on July 16, 1999. He was the son of the President, John F. Kennedy. The plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in the route between Essex Country Airport, New Jersey and Martha’s Vineyard Airport, Massachusetts. His wife was also killed in this plane crash. The bodies of the two of them and one crew member were spotted by a robotic underwater camera in the Atlantic Ocean.
5. SANJAY GANDHI
Sanjay Gandhi who was an Indian politician and a member of the Nehru – Gandhi dynasty died in a plane crash on 23 June, 1980. He was expected to succeed his mother as head of the Indian National Congress but before that could happen he died in this plane crash. He was flying an aircraft of the Delhi Flying club which crashed near Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. Sanjay Gandhi and Captain Subhash Saxena were the only ones in the plane and both were killed in the crash. It was believed that the crashed happen because the plane lost control.
4. LECH KACZYNSKI
Lech Aleksander Kaczynski died in a plane crash on 10 April, 2010. He was the President of Poland and was also a Polish Lawyer. It was a Tupolev Tu – 154 plane in which he was travelling which crashed while approaching Smolensk Air Base in Russia. All the 96 people were killed in the crash including Maria Kaczynska, wife of Lech Aleksander Kaczynski and also some of the top public and military figures of the Polish state. President Kaczynski’s body was returned to Poland on 11 April, 2010 and he and his wife were laid to rest in peace beneath the Wawel Cathedral on 18 April, 2010. A government commission was ordered to investigate about the crash and Russia’s Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, was placed in charge of the investigation.
3. AALIYAH Dana Haughton
Aaliyah, an American recording artist, dancer, actress and model died on August 25, 2001 in a plane crash. The reason behind the plane crash was summarized as the overloading of the plane and the way in which this weight was distributed in the plane. It was a twin engine Cessna 402B which crashed after takeoff at Marsh Harbour International Airport on Abaco Island. The 22 year old singer died along with the various members of the recording company at the spot when the plane crashed. Her funeral was held on August 31, 2001, at the St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York City and she was laid to rest in peace in the Rosewood Mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery.
2. KALPANA CHAWLA AND THE CREW OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA
Kalpana Chawla who was the first Indian American astronaut who was killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster along with the six other crew members, which occurred on February 1, 2003. The Space Shuttle crashed over Texas during re entry into the Earth’s atmosphere and took the lives of all seven astronauts. Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian-born woman and the second Indian person to fly in space on November 19, 1997 on her first space mission STS 87. She died in her second space mission STS 107 which was launched on 16 January, 2003. She have been awarded with Congressional Space Medal of Honour, NASA Space Flight Medal and NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
1. NETAJI SUBHASH CHANDRA BOSE
Subhash Chandra Bose who was also known as “Netaji”, died in a plane crash in Taipei, Taiwan on August 18, 1945. It was told that plane crashed due to engine failure and Subhash Chandra Bose’s body was burned badly and he died four hours after being admitted in a hospital. His body was then covered with cement, and his ashes were taken to Japan and placed in a grave at the Renkoji Temple in Tokyo. Also, a Buddhist memorial service was then held at Nishi Honganji Temple in Taihoku. All of these events were announced by Japan but it has still been a subject of mystery about what actually happened to him. He was one of the most prominent Indian nationalist leaders who fought for India’s Independence from British Rule by joining forces with the Axis powers. He was also the head of Azad Hind force and also a member of Indian National Congress. Though his death has still been a mystery, but if he died in a plane crash, then he is definitely the most famous one to have died in a plane crash because of his important role in the Indian Independence Movement.
