The Indian automotive industry is one of the largest in the world, in present day and age. It’s the sixth largest producer of passenger and commercial vehicles, with more than 8.9 million units rolling out each year. The manufactured vehicles are of both Indian and Foreign origin. With India having the required manpower and beneficial government policies, the foreign manufacturers prefer to manufacture vehicles in the Indian Territory, making India the 3rd largest exporter in Asia. There are currently 40 million passenger vehicles on road, making it one of the highest consumers of the world. Annually 4 million new vehicles are purchased, making the Indian civil sector, one of the highest spenders on automobiles. The times have changed a lot in the previous decade; nowadays a car to an Indian is no longer an unaffordable dream; hence people are becoming smart buyers opting for trendy and efficient cars. This has resulted in heavy competition among manufacturers, causing some of the coolest cars to roll out of the factory floor. Let’s take a look at the most awaited in the year 2013-2014.
13. Tata Nano Diesel
Right when you thought that the cute little Nano can’t cheer up our lives any better than it already has, along comes the new Tata Nano diesel. The new upgraded Diesel version of the Nano is all set for its launch in 2013. Though you get the same engine displacement as the petrol version, don’t expect this Nano to be sluggish, because it gets an all new DiCOR engine, which will make it a driving pleasure. Since it packs a diesel engine, the price of the Nano diesel is expected to be around Rs.2,00,000; but with the petrol prices soaring every month, this might be a smarter option.
12. Volkswagen UP
It’s been a while since Volkswagen entered the Indian Market; and since the launch of the Polo, they have been almost exclusively focusing on the sedan class. But with the nail biting competition in the hatchback class, they decided to roll up their sleeves and get in to the game with their all new UP. As funny as its sounds, this is one serious car if you’re looking for some hair-raising power on a budget. At an expected price of just 3.5 Lakhs, you get all the necessary electronics including ABS and some serious power. The powerful 1.2 liter engine delivers a maximum power of 75 BHP, so rest assured, this should be one fun little ride.
11. Chevrolet Sail Hatchback
The striking new hatchback from Chevrolet is the hottest new contester for the undisputed Maruti swift class, which has been doing the rounds for a while now. The new hatchback is expected to replace the boat like U-VA hatchback, which failed ultimately in the Indian market. It is expected to be released in both petrol and diesel versions with the mid-range engine of 1.2L. The design though a little outdated, and on the whole – old school, thanks to the Chinese design partner SAIC; it gets the required punch from the performance department to improve its sales. The perky engine develops 80 BHP power at its lowest variant, there are also plenty of smart engine options to choose from. Thanks to the 5 – year warranty on the engine and performance parts, and improved backup on service, the Chevrolet sail is truly a wise option.
10. Hyundai i10 Diesel
The long awaited diesel version of the Hyundai i10 is here to rule the streets again. It was a long wait before the Hyundai stable churned out this beauty, but its worth the wait considering the quality you get. The new edition is expected to get an uplift in its interiors and some added features in the electronics department as well. Though its disappointing that the i10 is not getting the CRDi diesel edition, with its brand value, one can expect it to be a valuable purchase.
9. Maruti Suzuki Jimny
Though the name of this variant may not be the exact thing you’re looking for, when purchasing a serious car; it’s the version from Maruti that almost took a decade to be launched. As most of you would have guessed by the looks, it is undoubtedly the replacement to the Maruti Gypsy. The Gypsy has stuck around so long, that any longer, it would be parked permanently when you visit a museum. The new replacement is expected to be trendy, powerful and for heaven’s sake with better suspension. The Jimny will get a 1.5 liter multi jet Diesel engine, especially made for this variant, which only makes it more interesting. The vehicle is quite underpowered for its class, developing only 85 PS of power and 200NM torque in its 4 cylinder engine. It will get a 5 speed manual transmission and hopefully some easy-on-the-legs gearshift.
8. Honda City Diesel
The top brass at Honda have finally stepped down and changed their minds. For over a decade of sales in India, it has released nothing but petrol versions; putting the fake smile on every proud Honda owner, while beneath, all of them are just swearing at the company. So for once you can get to see how the diesel bunks looks like. The all new car will be powered by a 1.4 liter icTDi engine, which means in plain English; you will drive a car that sound or feels nothing like a diesel. 7. Bajaj RE60
If you really love the auto rickshaw rides so much, and ever dreamt of owning one, minus all the crappy interiors, noise and especially the annoying driver, then this car is for you. It is the debut of the two wheeler giant – Bajaj, into the automobile market, and they have decided to prove a point. The engine displaces only 200 cc with the trademark DTSi ignition system. Though the vehicle may not put you on par with the entry lever small cars like Alto, Nano and the like, it will surely be your first car or more of joy ride, if you’re on a budget.
6. Honda Amaze
Another new release from the Honda stables – the new Honda Amaze is all set to to give the compact sedans, a run for their money. The Amaze is expected to be released at a starting prize of 5.5 Lakhs.

After the most beloved SUV from the American automotive leaders – the Endeavour, the new release of SUVs from Ford has been quite slim in India. The Ford EcoSport comes with only a 1L engine, but it produces an astounding 119 BHP power from its light engine. So, on theory, it will be light, versatile and really quick. It will definitely be the biggest competitor for the Renault Duster, which has been doing the rounds for a while now.
4. Volkswagen Golf
The people at Volkswagen have finally deemed us worthy of the ever beloved Volkswagen Golf. The most prized possession of the company is all set to be released in India this year around June. Though they should have released it before their horrendous decision to release the Beetle first; still, late is better than never. Though the a pretty underpowered version will be released in India, churning out just 108 BHP, it can still give a lot of – so called fast cars, a run for their money. The new edition will feature a 2 L engine with plenty of variants to choose from, and don’t worry there will be diesel as well.
3. Tata Pixel
Though many believed the Tata pixel to be just a follow up project on the Nano, the people at the design department at Tata have once again managed to sweep us off our feet. The Tata Pixel is almost incomparable with the Nano, except on size. It will feature a radical new design, which looks like it was driven straight out a comic book; a powerful 1.2L turbocharged Diesel engine, which will muzzle 65BHP at 5250 rpm. And here is the most interesting part: it has a turning radius of just 2.6 m, which is lower than most bikes. So now whenever a bike cuts you off in traffic, you don’t have to sit back and clench your teeth – teach them a lesson.
2. Audi A3
Moving on to the cool ones, where money comes second, Audi A3 definitely deserves to be the most expected performance sedan of the year 2013. Though the older A3 was already, unbelievably cool, the new one, will, even make your girlfriend wag her tail to hop in. the new edition is an absolute behemoth with its eerie front grill doing all the power talking for you. The petrol 1.8 TFSI will deliver a peak power of 158 BHP and 250NM torque, which will get you from 0 to 100 in a just under 6.6 seconds. So, hey going to the office doesn’t have to be boring anymore.
1. BMW 1 series
The long awaited BMW is undoubtedly the most awaited car of 2013. It’s the entry level BMW, we have all been craving for, and the BMW Corporation has finally decided to let us have it, and have it in style. The brand new, 1 series, will come with a petrol variant 1.6 L engine, delivering a max torque of 220NM at 4300 RPM. The style is quite satisfactory, though a bit disappointing compared to the other German giants. But still the BMW quality will be unimpeded, and being manufactured in India, the starting prices are expected to be around 14 Lakhs – something to put a big smile on the buyer’s face.
