Veganism can be defined as the custom of refraining from animal and its products in form of food or other derived products. A person following veganism is called as a vegan. In respect to it, a person who has no problem with eating dairy supplements – in the form of milk or egg, is said to be known as a vegetarian.
Veganism is classified into: 1) Dietary vegans – vegetarians who abstain from animal produce, that includes meat, fish, any dairy product and other animal-derived substances. 2) Ethical vegan – a person who, in addition to being a dietary vegan, also opposes the use of animal products for any purpose. 3) Environmental vegans – they are referred to the group of people who reject the use of animal products since it harms the nature and are unsustainable.
Vegan diet (and occasionally, even vegetarian diet) have many advantages over non-vegetarian diet. Apart from the health benefits, veganism also emphasizes on the environment and the balance in nature and the injustice faced by the animals. As Leo Tolstoy stated, “As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields.” We shouldn’t take our Mother Earth for granted and treat it as if we own it and we are above all other creatures living in it.
Some of the advantages of eating vegan diet are as follows:
1o. Avoids Ingestion of E. Coli & Salmonella
E. Coli, the leading cause of blood diarrhea, enters the body via eating contaminated red meat. A person with lower immunity or compromised immune system, can even die due to it. But, eating vegan food completely eliminates the chances of E. Coli entering the body, henceforth avoiding the infection.
Salmonella food poisoning, habitually caused due to contact with raw eggs or raw chicken meat from chickens infected with salmonella, is a gastrointestinal illness. Yet again, the preference of vegan food completely eradicates the risk of contacting the illness.
9. Less Toxin Consumption
Logically, going by the concept of bio-magnification you will increase the chances of ingesting chemicals as you move upwards in the food chain. More the chemicals an animal consume, more you will consume.
Chemicals sprayed on dead animals, preservatives and other artificial ingredients used during the manufacturing process accumulate in the body in the form of toxin. After a certain period of time, this accumulation can turn even fatal.
Also, studies show that when an animal experience fear, it releases steroids, and other stress hormones into the bloodstream because of the adrenaline rush. These chemicals, when ingested by a human, act as a toxin for its body and ends up collecting in the blood.
8. Lower Risk of Diabetes & Maintenance of Low Blood Pressure
Stable blood sugar can be achieved without any difficulty if nutritional vegetarian diet is accepted, and it lowers the risk of diabetes down a notch. When meat combines with unhealthy carbs; the cycle of blood sugar level peaks and crashes. This extremity of blood sugar cycle is eliminated when meat and its substituent are avoided. Complex carb and fiber – which is found in plant food – maintains the insulin effectively, resulting in lower chances of diabetes.
Also, vegan and vegetarian diets have low content of sodium and fats, and hence, helps reduce blood pressure. It ends up improving blood circulation instead.
Thomas Edison - “Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.”
Million of animals and birds are killed in the name of food. Mahatma Gandhi proclaimed truth and nonviolence, but should human be that selfish to make it all about himself? Every day, as it progress, numerous other beings are slaughtered for feeding the humans. If we have the option of avoiding it, why don’t we? We can always turn ourselves to vegan diet and save a couple and more of lives. A vegetarian diet supplies all the proteins and nutrients necessary for the body, and as a result, it is a better alternative for a diet.
6. A Source of Energy & Weight Loss
Pythagoras - “For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”
Carbohydrates provide energy to the body. When the body lack carbohydrates, it will burn muscle tissue. Also, it takes more energy to digest animal protein. This energy can be saved for future use if vegetarianism is adopted.
Also, animal food contains higher content of fats & saturated fats and cholesterol in comparison to plant food. Henceforth, it reduces the chances of weight gain which ultimately reduces the possibility of health problems caused by obesity. The reason may be that vegan diet includes fruits and vegetables which possess less saturated fat, and as a result, they possess less calorie which acts a vital role in the weight moderation.
5. A Balance in Nature
Mahatma Gandhi - “To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being.”
As we progress towards future, we are eliminating lives for our own selfish needs. People tend to ignore the source of their non-vegetarian meat, and henceforth, they tend to ignore the catastrophe it might cause in future. Killing a particular type of animal, in the name of food, is going to disrupt the food chain and hence is the reason for imbalance in the nature.
If a person prefers vegan diet over meat, he will be focusing on flora, rather than fauna. A plant isn’t killed if we consume its by-products, whereas, the meat is obtained by killing a particular species of the animal. When the slaying is in a wider scale, it might even eradicate the creature from Earth.
4. Lower Risk of Cancer
Albert Einstein - “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”
Plants and its substituent are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients, which play a vital role in lowering the risk of cancer in the body. In respect to it, non-vegetarian food, particularly meats with fat, are at a significantly higher risk towards the disease. High fiber diet are said to reduce numerous types of cancer.
Fruits and fibers are proved to reduce the risk of lung cancer and colon cancer.
Potassium balances acidity and water content in the body, which further stimulates the kidney to remove toxins. It is obtained from plant based food, and reduces the risk of heart diseases and cancer related to it.
Also, plant food gives phyto-chemicals to the body, which prevents and heals the cancer.
3. Economic Option
Mahatma Gandhi - “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
High fiber and high nutritional food’s shopping decreases the expense by 25%, in comparison with grocery shopping of meat and its substituent. Since the meat has to be processed and kept in certain preservatives, its cost amplifies significantly. Also, getting hold of an animal is harder than picking up some plant, which increases the price.
Furthermore, a vegetarian diet saves money in restaurants and hotels since a vegetarian meal is less expensive than its meatier counterpart. So, turning one’s own self into a plant – eating person will lessen his day to day expenditure.
2. Healthier Skin
It is observed that people have significantly lower amount of blemishes after they switch to vegan diet. Water based and nutrient rich food have high content of antioxidants, which protects the damaging of the cells and hence help the body retain healthy skin.
Fruits and vegetables beat the non-vegetarian food in context of water content and nutrient. The yielding of antioxidants takes part in protecting the skin and prevents skin aging, whereas, meat creates a toxic state and free radicals which damages the skin. This results in cracks, so that the body can release the toxins, which results in unhealthy skin.
Often we see vegetables, such as cucumber, being used in massages. The sole reason of its usage is that the high content of water in it is very good for skin and its treatment.
1. A Healthy Heart
Replacing dairy products and meat with nuts and whole grains improves the cardiovascular health. Vegan diet reduces the risk of heart diseases, and also, prevents heart attacks & stroke. It is made possible as it significantly lessens clogging due to cholesterol and fats.
Also, vegan diet helps reduce blood pressure which improves the blood circulation in the body.
